    Default 1998 Golf CL Newbie

Hey all, i'm new to volkswagon cars, my friend has a 1998 Golf CL Hatch for sale it's done 119,000KM he wants approx $8000

The car is in very good condition, wanted to know is the 1998 Golf reliable? expensive to service? expensive to buy parts?

I'm tossing up between the Golf and a Corolla hatch
Any help will be awesome =D

    Hi mate and welcome

If you want reliability, then a Corolla is hard to beat.

A 1998 Golf CL (which to me sounds like a 1.8L) for $8000 is very dear. I'd expect to pay no more than $5000 for something like that.

My wife picked up a 1997 GL (the 2.0L) with similar mileage for $9000 5 years ago. It's been very reliable until recently, we have a small electrical issue with the engine which we're still sorting. Things to lookout for with these would be the aircon system, gearbox and window regulators. It can add up if you're unlucky.

Not trying to scare you from them, they're good cars but don't expect it to be problem-free

thanks for the reply yes it is the 1.8L , because it's been well maintained and serviced on time each time i think that's why its 8000$, i might be able to drop the price to $7000, only prob that this CL had was with some electric coil.

Any other advice please let me know =)

IMO its the buyer that has to choose no other factors really come into it.

If you like the Golf buy it they're nice cruising cars

    Good Luck
