I had a 61 Karmann Ghia (my 1st love) from late 80s to early 90s, it too heated and died on days above 32c.

An old German VW mechanic told me it new oils are too thin for air coolers. And to use a heavier grade oil so it will not overheat. One with no or low solvents he said.

They were rare to find and usually full of dust at the bottom back rack of a store. But it worked. I know this as I had no issues when I used a heavier oil. I would tell new mechanics and they thought I was talkin shite - then it would die 1st heat wave!!! Grrrr

To restart: A trick I learnt (by an ex-girlfiend) is to jam a rag in the air intake later when it cools down. This starts the car but the oil will not keep the car cool of not heavy, so I also drained and added some oil if I could.

That was nearly 20 years ago - not sure what's out there now.

On a heat wave day, I often see air coolers on the side of the road and think of this.
