    Default Hot Weather

    G'day all,

I have question about heat related break downs.

The 66 beetle hates the hot days. It just stops as if it has run out of petrol. Is this because the petrol is vapourising before it reaches the carby, leaving the fuel bowl dry? Or is 40 degrees just to hot for the 1200 to handle? And how do people resolve these heat related problems? Your experiences would be much appreciated.

when I ran a beetle, back in the late '80s, it was a 1300 converted to 1600. I installed an oil cooler, replaced mechanical fuel pump with electric and also had a high capacity oil pump installed.

    Default Oils ain't oils

I had a 61 Karmann Ghia (my 1st love) from late 80s to early 90s, it too heated and died on days above 32c.

An old German VW mechanic told me it new oils are too thin for air coolers. And to use a heavier grade oil so it will not overheat. One with no or low solvents he said.

They were rare to find and usually full of dust at the bottom back rack of a store. But it worked. I know this as I had no issues when I used a heavier oil. I would tell new mechanics and they thought I was talkin shite - then it would die 1st heat wave!!! Grrrr

To restart: A trick I learnt (by an ex-girlfiend) is to jam a rag in the air intake later when it cools down. This starts the car but the oil will not keep the car cool of not heavy, so I also drained and added some oil if I could.

That was nearly 20 years ago - not sure what's out there now.

On a heat wave day, I often see air coolers on the side of the road and think of this.

Anyone else share this view / trick? 1st time, I've had an opportunity to blog to confirm with anyone.
