Brakes for a 2000 Golf

going to be buy pads and rotors again for my golf, just wondering what brands i should look at.
Couple of years back super cheap quoted me around 500 for dba pad and rotors.
Vw charged me in the end 700 as they had them instock.
And is it also true the golf's rotors cant be machined. (been on car for about 2 years now). whats the min thickness for them?

wanting to get slotted rotor?

any help would be great, Also will be installing myself (with some help).

minimum thickness will be stamped on outer edge of disc.
