Thread: Mk5 GTI Fuel Contamination - Recommend Mechanic??

Question Mk5 GTI Fuel Contamination - Recommend Mechanic??

    Hello all!

Brief intro: My name is Daniel and I've been a car nut for years. The majority of my experience revolves around Japanese Imports, with a few V8 Holden's thrown in the mix too.

Now for my question: There's a GTI coming up for auction that is a 'repairable writeoff' from fuel contamination.

Basically there was a batch of silicone contaminated fuel floating around Melbourne several weeks ago, and it caused cars to run rough. Some people were quick to shut down their cars & they only needed the fuel system cleaned out, along with some new plugs & injectors, and they were good to go.

Given this particular auction is for cars that are written off, I can only assume the owner of this car kept driving it (despite the lack of power & poor running) and it likely was leaning out, and burnt out a valve, blew a head gasket, or worse, damaged a piston.

Anyway, long story short, I need to assume a worse case scenario here, so on top of the usual fuel system clean out, I need to assume the engine has failed.

I can get a second hand complete engine for around $3.5k from Japan, although I note this was from a DSG car and the one up for auction is manual, however I figure the main guts of the engine would be same same.

I'm guessing that this could be a cheaper way to go than having somebody tear the engine down (assuming it needed it)??

Anybody care to recommend a good mechanic in Melbourne familiar with these cars? All of my contacts are more suited bolting large turbos onto Jap imports.

    I thank you in advance.

Just make sure if you are buying a donor engine that it has the exact same engine code (three letter code) - that way there should be no issues with a transplant.

There must be some major damage to the system for them to call it a write off - hope you get the wreck cheap!

Was there different engines used in the MK5 Golf GTI's? The car is a 2007 6 speed manual, the doner engine is also an 07 year golf MK5 GTI turbo engine code 'BWA'.

    Thanks for your reply

As long as the donor or auction vehicles are not a Pirelli you should be safe.
As Guy says check engine codes on both make sure they match up.

Coolio, thanks for that will check, I do recall those Perelli's had a bit more oomph.

Yep, there was BWA (Most Common), but 05' to 06' had an AXX prefix - not interchangeable (without considerable expense).

The Pirelli's ran the "Edition 30" Motor with a lot of differences.

All of them used the same engine code (just to confuse you!)
