Solution is to go and drive the cars your interested in..... If you want quick then look at the Pirelli GTI. Big turbo and lots of room for tuning.
Hi all, let me introduce myself. I live in WA. I've always driven luxury cars. Current car is a massive Holden Caprice. I'm thinking of downsizing but only in size, not quality & luxury. Well being born in Germany, German cars have always been in my blood. I've researched a lot of cars lately and the VW Golf seams to tickle my fancy. Particularly the GTI model.
Now, I've been reading reviews and speaking to people about the car. I read an online review saying the GT model, and I quote; 'feels as quick as the GTI' (source: webwombat). Then my brother tells me that he saw a report on TV where some Aussie car show road tested a few models and they apparently said the standard Golf power output is pretty much the same as the GTI.
I'm not sure where the above information is accurate. Why on earth would VW produce a standard car that is pretty much the same powerful as the GTI version?
Is there any truth in this madness? Because if there is. I would probably be thinking Comfortline fully decked out then a GTI base model.
I've got plenty of time to make up my mine. If I cant sell my Caprice for the price I want I will keep it for about 24 months longer. Hope I sell it sooner![]()

I will try to go for a test drive some time.
Yeh, I like the Pirelli... too much $$$. If I did go with a VW, I will try to keep it at $40k. Probably a Demo etc. I hear the new GTI VI will be released next year. Maybe they will be having some deals on the GTI V by then.
Still, does anyone know the answer to my original question?
I think you may also enjoy a 2.0 Litre TDI (103kw). The GT also came with the TDI, but with 125kw![]()
Cheers for that. I will need to take some for a test drive soon or later. All depends on how fast I can sell the Caprice. Trade in value is far below my lease buyout.
Its a pity that stock there is not much stock in WA. I looked online to see if there are many demo model yet couldn't find anything that tickles my fancy. I cant go back to non-leather seats, cruse control is a must.
DSG is also a necessity. My wife, at age 24, is still in the process of obtaining her license. But it will be an automatic license.
Hello anonymousmoose welcome to OzVolks
The review and vehicles your refering to in regard to Golf power output being same as GTI was done by The Car Show with the Golf GT (and later named GT Sport) 1.4 TSI having very similar output at the wheels as the GTI.
So this does not include the Golf 1.6L (Mk5) and 2.0 FSI (Mk5) in Trendline, Comfortline and Sportline trims.
The new 118TSI may be a good alternative unless you want the new Golf 6 GTI due next month.
Pirelli is a cool GTI as it has the engine from the S3 and has tuning potential.

Having driven neither I can't really comment but the GT is good in that its technologically ahead with TSI engine and GTI is good in that it has resale and a badge.
Really if I was in your shoes I'd drive both and see which suited my (your) driving style/habits.
Both are good cars![]()

Hi
I was originally going to by a GT, however after driving them both, there was no substitute for the GTI, not too mention that the GT was also very hard to source in WA 12 months ago. This is my first european car (Having previously owned a Subaru XT Forester Luxury) and since owning one I can't see myself going back to jap or aussie cars. The GTI is quicker (after chipping) and heaps more economical. The engine is so good, that I just purchased an Audi Q5 with the same, but more advanced version of the 2.0 TFSI.
If you can wait a while and come up with a few extra dollars, the new GTI-R (AWD 2.0 litre, with Audi 195kw S3 motor) may be the way to go...I'm certainly looking forward to it...might do an upgrade from my Mk5.
Mine cost $29,000 second hand with only sunroof option. But best car I have ever owned...and I've had many.
Hope this helps
