Can anyone throw some light on the best way to keep the wheel arches clean on the 2009 model A4?
The liner appears to be a sound deadening "felt-like" material. I'm just wondering if this can be cleaned like older cars that had an asphalt type coating with a strong water jet etc. I'm mainly concerned with the durability aspect and am cautious about doing damage to the wheel arch liner if I clean it using the wrong technique.

Welcome Doug,
Its a kind of cloth / carpet material. On mine, I found it best to use a pressure cleaner to get mud & loose grit out of it. Use care & caution & don't get too close or I'm sure you will damage it!
Cold water through a high pressure cleaner usually does the trick.
I use the Karcher on the Golf to remove the bulk of the dirt. Then I use Armorall Cleaner, spraying it on liberally and using a soft brush to agitate the "felt". This can then be sprayed with clean water.
This process gets it back to original quality.

I can vouch for Maris' technique after seeing it in person at DoVW Adelaide in March where he won 1st Prize in the catergory he was entered.
