I have an RNS510 audio/sat navigation system that cuts in and out interminably.
I had a technician install Bluetooth and after several weeks the system cuts out and make a popping/surge thru the car speakers. I have since had VW Australia void all warranty as they didn’t install the Bluetooth.
I have had the Bluetooth removed but the problem is still there.
I then had it taken out of my car and installed an AVC9000 and have no problems which makes me assume all issues are with the RNS 510 not the car can-bus electrical.
The RNS 510 does/did actually work each time I started the car for 5 to 10 minutes before cutting out and making the surge sound, which makes me believe it is not totally broken it just cannot stay powered for an extended period.
Does anyone know of a technician who may be able to have a look at it?
Isn't RNS or your car under warranty ?

Once I had an aftermarket Bluetooth installed (VW didn't have one in the market at the time) VW McGrath's Liverpool void all warranty as they had not installed it and pointed all blame towards the Bluetooth for causing the issue with the RNS 510.
They refused to look at the system as they felt it was no longer their issue, I have since replaced it with an AVC 9000 which worked perfectly so I know there is no issue with the can-bus or any internal electrics. And given the RNS still turns on and functions perfectly but only for 5 to 10 minutes makes me believe it can be repaired ……
The Bluetooth installer compensated me, I am just hoping to get the RNS running as the AVC9000 I installed is nowhere near as good as the RNS 510.
As far as I know VW Australia still cannot support Bluetooth to the RNS 510 here?
It is annoying. GPS / ipod / bluetooth is given away free or a very low cost option in many Japanese cars or even the new Falcon. But in a VW you can't do it properly for any amount of money. No wonder the krauts lost the war...
Shayne,
We have new power supplies & mother boards in stock for it - so it will be worthwhile us looking at it for you. If its deamed uneconomical to repair, we may purchase it for spare parts too.
This is not the first time it has happened & given that the RNS510's are ~$3300 a piece.
An option for you anyway.
I have just sent it to Siemans Australia (Melbourne) after begging them to have a look at it for me, they didn't really want to touch it as it is made exclusive for VW but he agreed VW are not helpful when it comes to warranty, so no promises from their side as he is not sure they can fix it
I should have an answer later this week? If they can't help I would love to take up your offer to get you to look at it. I plan to travel to Brisbane in the next fortnight so will drop by if that's ok?
More out of curiosity what is the cost of a mother board for these and if it's not the whole board and maybe an IC Module can these be replaced
I assumed that Siemans weren't offering spare parts, and am very interested to know how many other RNS 510 have experienced my problem. VW were VERY quick to get rid of me the minute they saw an exit opportunitty to lay blame on someone else
Either way glad to have found someone who knows a bit about these in Australia....
Hi Shayne,
Yours is now the third we know of that has been damaged by a third party accessory installer.
The Mother board is ~ $1400 - but if anything else (hard drive / power supply) is damaged then its not economical to repair (of course!)
