Default First Post - Few Jetta Questions

    Howdy Folks,

I've just purchased an 07 Jetta and a I have a few modification questions.

    1. The car has an 8 speaker stereo system installed. If I was to take out the factory stereo system and install a nice Pioneer stereo, will it accommodate all 8 speakers? The stereo has MOSFET 50w x 4 but being 8 speakers, does that mean that it can accommodate all 8 speakers, but it won't be as powerful, or does that mean you'll only be able to connect 4 speakers? This question is further complicated as I'm looking at placing 2 single DIN units in the car (media receiver and standard CD player) which means it will have connections for 8 speakers. I'm not really sure how it works in Car stereos so any help or information here would be great

    2. My Jetta has tire pressure sensors installed that will give me a warning when the pressure is low. If I was to change the tires and rims on the car, will that system still work? Is it built into the wheel, or is the system attached to the car?

Any answers you may have would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Frank.

Welcome Frank - It sounds like your car has a factory amplifier (should be mounted under the front passenger seat).

My suggestions would be take it to your local Audi specialist & get them to check it out for you & suggest compatibility.

On the tyre pressure sensors: They are an ABS based system which looks at difference in wheel rotation speed, so no separate sensors at all. Any after-market wheel / tyre combination will be fine as long as you have all 4 with the same rolling diameter.

    Thanks AVG

I'll check for the amplifier when I pick up the car early next week - If it's there, I have my own stereo specialist guy that will be able to check out the situation around the back of the unit and see if I can fit a single or two seperate single DIN units.

Good news about the tyre pressure sensor. I thought it might have been something embedded in the original Rims. Just wondering how it can tell if the tyre pressure is running low with wheel rotation if it has no basis to refer from.

i.e. I get a new set of lower profile tyres and rims. How does the sensor tell that they are running flat if the sensor is calibrated to the original set of tyres. Wonders of technology.

I probably won't get new rims or different size tyres because that will also bugger up my speedo accuracy. An APR ECU re-map is definitely in order though

    Thanks again for your reply

    Frank.

    Cheers Frank!

The tyre monitoring system is pretty sensitive on wheel rotation, a couple of PSI difference shows up pretty quickly, you would be amazed!

Hello, congrats on the Jetta. It's a nice car

The speakers are really 'grouped' as pairs - each door gets 1 tweeter and 1 woofer which take 1 output out of the factory radio (ie the factory radio has 4 outputs just like any other normal radios). Our TDI Jetta did not have an amp but if you have one, it would be under the passenger seat as Guy said. It is a passive amp and you really don't need to worry about it. You should really connect the media unit to the input end of the CD player - in fact most of them should work like that, the media unit wouldn't be a standalone headunit. A tidier way of doing it would be getting a double-DIN unit?

Also these cars run CAN-BUS 2 so make sure you have the correct CAN converter, or you will not be able to get ignition, lights and speed signals

There are two types of tyre pressure sensors on the VW/Audis - the Jettas come with the TPMS which like Guy said works through the ABS systems, which is good for swapping wheels :-)

and yes... a tune up is a must, which engine do you have?
    Go APR!!

    Hey Lams,

    Thanks

I had a couple of pioneer head units in mind for the car, but i believe that i'll lose the steering wheel volume and mute controls if I was to change. It's the only thing stopping me from switching.

I had a look under the passenger seat, no amp - I guess they are the grouped pairs you mentioned in your post. See, Pioneer have a great new set of stereo systems now and i was looking at combining these two items -

    and

I figured out the tyre pressure sensor and all that is good

I have the 2.0 Turbo FSI petrol engine under the hood. When I posted last, I still didn't have the car and I thought that I would need the APR ECU tweak, but now that I own the car, I don't think I need the extra power.

I do have another question though.

For the life of me, I can't turn the child lock system off. Every time I take off, the doors and boot all lock. When I stop, turn off the engine and take the key out of the ignition, they don't unlock. I've read the instruction manual and it says you can edit this in the menu. I've tried for about 2 hours to get the menu system up on my display using the manuals instructions and I just can't get it up there.

The display on my dash is all red at the moment. I believe that's the colour it should be. All the other buttons on my dash work fine and I can switch between the basic computer settings (i.e. litres per 100km, km's per tank, speed warning etc etc) they all switch, but to get the main menu up, I have no clue.

It's the only thing I haven't worked out yet.

    Any ideas anyone?

    Frank.

Only cars from MY08 or cars fitted with satnavs from factory (not done here by a dealer) have a full height trip computer screen for you to change those lock settings.
If yours doesn't have it then you'd have to see someone with access to a factory diagnostic tool or VCDS diagnostic tool.

I still don't understand why you'd want to combine the 2 systems. It will fit physically but there will be nothing to connect them with. The car runs 1 stereo only, there's no point in running 2. It's like a computer driven by 2 desktop boxes, it just doesn't work like that?

oh and APR ECU... it is a must!
    Go APR!!

    Hi Lams,

    Thanks for the info.

I can stop pulling my hair out about the child lock system and disabling it.

For the Stereo, i'm actually thinking about a double DIN unit now that can do all those 2 Single DIN units can do. I just hope that the double DIN unit can work with the steering wheel controls.

The APR ECU could still be on the cards, but when I get some cash together. 1700 bucks for the ECU is quite a chunk from my budget.

    Hi Frank

Just purchased a Jetta myself - do you mind me asking what engine is powering your Jetta?

Please post any future pictures of you modifications as I will be watching with interest.

    Hi Phaeton,

My '07 Jetta has the 2.0L Turbo FSI engine

It's done over 100,000 kilometres now and it's still purring like a kitten
