T4 Auto fault- WAG COm connection.. where the hell is it?

HI all,

We have just purchased a 1997 T4 transport van with an auto that only selects the 1st and 2nd gear... has any one heard of this problem? I don't know whether its a electrnic or mechanical fault. I am new to VW and am unfamiliar with its common problems.

I did buy a Vag Com connection and diagnostic program to hopefully find out the problem exactly but I can't even find this connection!!! Anyone know where it is?

Any help would be greately appreciated!!

on a "late" 97, its under a rectangular panel to the left of the instruments & steering column.
