    Default 1998 Golf issues

    hi everyone,

Just wondering with the old square ish shap 1998 Golf CL - end of run 4 door hatchs manaual, what the problems were with these?

Just looking for an in expensive run about in between a new VW or AUDI?

I have seen a 98 hatch with under 110k km on it, and was wondering if the clutches were due every 80k km like the audi a3 of that era? Also any other major issues, just as I will need it for about months and would rather a euro then a corrolla? for the same money..

    Thank you VW fans...

hi, these are getting a few years on them now. Generally they're quite reliable, my wife had a 97 model for 4-5 years and I replaced:
    battery
    3 window regulators
    ignition lock switch

and most recently something in the ECU stuffed up, but that doesn't seem to be a common problem (yet)

as with most old cars, the clear coat on the roof's starting to come off, the headlining's coming off, the foam seal around some aircon ducts are coming out, but it's still a solid car

I've heard some gearbox issues with these but didn't experience it

Never really had any problems with the clutches - clutches wear due to the driver just as much as they do with old age!

Tough & safe, but as with all used cars - get it inspected by a specialist firstly!
