I'm looking at importing a 2005 Sharan 7 seater, 1.8lt turbo petrol (EU built) from Ireland to Australia (currently living in Ireland). I've contacted VW Australia with the same question to which they couldn't answer, and that's will there be servicable parts (engine and gearbox) in Australia, and would it comply with AU standards? What other information about this vehicle would assist my query? Any help appreciated.

I would asume that the enginue is similar as a lot of the VW range, so parts for that wouldn't be much of a problem.
Gearbox may be a different matter....

The parts side - you should be able to find the basic mechanical parts to be the same as similar other models here - body & running gear (specific to the Sharan) could be a little harder.
To private import a car of this age should not be too much of an issue Sharan's of that age had standards very similar to the AU standards - save for child seat restraints. - you need to consult the AU Gov websites:
http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/importing_vehicles/index.aspx
They have an information line to help you out. If they suggest, it would be a good idea to hire an engineer (who ensures compliance) and puts the "import plate" on for registration. Obviously it makes sense to do this in the city you will be arriving at!
Hope this helps!
