The Santana 2000, 3000 & Vista are all based on the second generation Passat.

The Santana 2000 project was intiated by VW Brazil in the late 1980s as a replacement for the 1st generation Passat, due to the high cost of the 3rd generation Passat, it must have been deemed cheaper to reenhance the 2nd Gen Passat than tool up for 3rd Gen.

In 1991s VW Brazil and 1995 Shanghai VW launched the Santana 2000 to the Brazilian and Chinese markets respectively.

The Santana 2000 for the Chinese Market has a 2655mm wheelbase while the Brazilian retains 2nd Gen Passat footprints of 2550mm.

The current and former Vista, 3000 and 2000 are available with a 1.8L engine producing 72kW with 150Nm of torque and a 2.0L.

Also the still make the 2nd generation Passat as the Santana in china still.

Wow that's crazy. Any idea what they cost of the thing over there?
I don't think the performance is going to anything to write home about. 74kW @ 5200rpm and 155Nm @ 3800rpm. I couldn't find the weight though.
Woah front disc breaks!!!

I love the descriptions in there. Some of my favourites:
"The roof window that the deluxe version is equipped with is a product of German WEBASTO. It is of a hidden sliding structure fitted with toughened glass that is heat insulating and ultraviolet ray proof, and has an anti-trapping function, too."
"6-CD player: Hi-tech facilities create a comfortable and pleasant interior atmosphere to give the driver enjoyment and pleasure during his long-distance driving."
"Every successful person would like to create a stage as large as possible to demonstrate his talents. The brand new SANTANA GLi/GLS travel wagon possesses ultra-large luggage trunk that is luxurious, comfortable and has a great load capacity..."

"Santana" - that model sends a shiver down my spine :033102bad_1_prv: - There were 15 grey imports bought into the country 15 years ago - they fell into the hands of unknowing owners....

Running a VW workshop / parts outlet & wrecking yard, nothing would fit (outside of the engine bay) and a lot of components were made by Nissan (electricals mainly!) - so the poor owners had great difficulty in getting parts - a simple broken taillight was a nightmare!

Anyway, no more grey imports here
