I bought my Caddy Maxi September 2008 and in November, I had it converted into a campervan... well some friends call it a Crampervan... I called it Caddyshak...and it includes a 60 litre fridge, sink, single bed. I am not sure how to post pics... if someone could let me know.. .I will post some pics. I did the design and had the conversion done in Bundaberg... by Casey's RV and Accessories...... I just had a look in the FAQ and found how to post pics... will do some soon...will have to resize the ones I have.. .and thanks Aussie OZ volks guy for his help

I don't know whether I stuffed up a little but at least the pics are there. I have a 120ah deep cycle battery which is surplus to the actual vehicle battery. There are 2 LED lights inside and they use very little power. I also have a 380 watt inverter which I use to recharge phone and computer. At present I am making up an awning for the side which I will attach to the roof racks. I have a BCF Tent that fits on the side but will probably put that on the back when I get my awning. Of course, it's a 1.9 TDI manual and fuel consumption is great. Handles pretty good to because of the weight (oh yeah... I have a 45 litre water tank under the bed as well). I lived in this vehicle for four and a half months after I had it outfitted.

Thanks for that.. the bed was a little untidy in that pic.. .but what the heck. I am about to have my 30,000k service done and can't believe the difference in prices from one dealer to the next.. I live in Cairns and the dealer here quoted me $600 but I could drive 300+k to Townsville for the service to save $150 (less fuel of course). A Volks trained private service guy here in Cairns quoted me about $250 using Fuchs C3 oil. The dealer here quoted me $139.60 for 5 litres of the VW recommended Castrol oil. I can buy 20 litres for $400 but it would take me ages to use it. What oils do others use?

I like the access to the sink and fridge from the rear thats a good idea.

We use Penrite on all vehicles at work.

Thanks mate. I got the single door to make more room on the sides. The struts have already been replaced, they buggered up at about 20,000k - the new ones they installed are much heavier duty. I was lucky someone was not walking past the vehicle when they gave away... the door just dropped down - I was having a snooze and thought someone was having a lend of me... :buck_teeth: think I should get some racing stripes? Not really as I am trying to make it look just like a normal van

I thought I should let you know... the struts that failed were the ones on the back door....:buck_teeth::buck_teeth: by the way... this is my 5th VW...two beetles 1959 (second hand), new 1964 then Passat (70s), Transporter 2.4 diesel Campervan LWB AWD Trakka conversion (sold because some silly bugger offered me too much to refuse - sold for $5500 more than I paid - also thought it was a low geared though a VW salesman said that motor was gutless), then this Caddy

Hey Ben, when is the next Caddy due? and what is it goign to have over the current one? thinking.....

2011 (facelift) is due here; is my bet after T5 update and Amarok have settled in.

New engines mainly 1.6 TDI & 2.0 TDI (common rail) and the new Golf-Polo face.

Have fun everyone.... I may have to sell the Caddy Maxi... unforseen circumstances I'm afraid... if you know some solo traveller who is looking and wants something cheap to run...will be annoying to sell as I have just made up an awning which can be removed when not camping...and havent even used it.... :( oh well things happen...just about to have the 30,000k service done.... have a great 2010

Old Timer
07-01-2010, 03:28 PM
I can't believe it.... not even 30,000ks and the power steering pump has gone on my caddy. I took it in for the dealer here to check.. of course... I have to wait for parts to arrive.... I don't reckon they carry too many parts here in Cairns... oh.. one think if anyone with a caddy sees this... how much does it cost for a 30,000 k service where you are.. .they quoted me $600

phaeton
08-01-2010, 12:34 PM
Is the pump under warranty ?

Old Timer
08-01-2010, 02:05 PM

Lams
08-01-2010, 02:48 PM
600 is steep... does it need new brakes or something? shouldn't cost that much

mine's at 60000km now, but it's never been serviced at a VW centre so I guess it's no point comparing prices

Old Timer
09-01-2010, 11:05 AM
No.. doesn't need brakes....I got a quote from Townsville for $450, Maroochydore $400... so I cannot work it out... I bought these prices up with the local guys when I went to get the steering checked but they didn't want to know... so the will lose me for sure, won't be getting any services done at my local VW dealer.. I have a local mechanic I have used for my Transporter and will use him... he said about $250....and he uses Fuchs oils...a C3 oil... Titan Pro...there is another VW trained mechanic in town and he quoted me about the same and the same oil....

Old Timer

jeez... it is so hard in Cairns finding tyres for my Caddy... the load rating is the problem 95T.... and so much confusion.. one dealer says to put 2 205/65/R15 on the back and bring the back to the front.. .another says when I finally put those tyres on the front it will affect my turning circle and of course the height and the width of these tyres are different...I am sure it would affect my insurance if I happened to have a prang and the company found out... any suggestions on what tyres to fit.... they are now 195/65R15 95T- Here in Cairns I can have a choice of Firestone for $145 or Yokohama for $188 - I have found tyres here in Cairns are expensive... .when I had my Transporter.. .I had 2 tyres fitted in Cairns and then when I got to Mt Isa (way out in the bush) they supplied me with the same tyre $37 each cheaper. I know Toyo make a 350 series for this vehicle.

Aussie Volks Guy
12-02-2010, 09:40 AM
I don't think you will have any issue with 205's on the front at all.

An extra 10mm in width will not change the turning circle.

Most important for insurance is the load rating.

Old Timer
12-02-2010, 10:42 AM
thanks mate... so if I get a tyre with a higher load rating and higher speed rating then it's okay as well? sorry, just want to make sure I get it right...:)

Old Timer
13-02-2010, 05:10 PM
I went ahead and put the 205s on the back and moved the back tyres to the front for the time being. Will replace with 205s when the fronts need replacing. Hope the 205s will fit in the spare wheel carrier... :)
