i filled up a full tank yesterday, and during the day i could smell some petrol in the cabin, even today there was a light smell of it.

could it be the full tank? the hot weather? or a possible leak?

how old is your car?

It is posible that its all three of your quesses. for the leak, if it smells when the tank is ful, i'd look around the fuel pump sender, there is a rubber ring that may have deteriorated.

its a late 98, mk4. i looked around today, pretty much everywhere i could see, but no sign of a leak or anything. my tank is still full so i dont seem to be losing gas, but i think it may have been the hot hot weather and the smell of the plastic possibly. with the rubber thing you're taking bout, where it is located?

just an update on the issue, turn out it was a crack in the sender fuel line underneath my seat, thats what the "dude" said, so waiting to see what vw says on the price and labour.

On these cars there are two main fuel lines - feed & return. If you had a split or crack fuel would pour out under pressure.

The sender is electronic & part of the fuel pump assembly in the fuel tank under the back seat - so no "line" to leak fumes.

One other possibility is the venting system. There is a substantial venting system which ties in with the polution gear & air pump etc, now this does carry fuel vapours, and is the most likely suspect in this internet diagnosis :buck_teeth:

turns out it was the actual fuel sender ( the plastic part above the tank, plastic part thing) that had a crack in it, not sure how or why as there seem to be no signs of pressure or force on it. but it's has a crack in it, and was just leaking fuel in the little compartment under the black metal cap below the rear seat.

should be done today, but damn was it costly.

Glad they found it. Good thing you don't have any smoking passengers in the back :nodder:

ye was lucky, cars all done kept the old fuel pump assembly as a souvenir.

ye tell me bout it, and even with these hot days i was silly enough to have driven it around for bout 2 days with a full backseat of fuel, just glad its all done.
