Hi Everyone good to see the site up and running. Looks good so far.
So here is my 2004 R32. As per my signature it's number 44 of the 200 that came to Australia. I picked it up at the beginning of September this year and am the second owner.
Cheers

The previous owner (Peter) was a telecomms guy (fibre and business phone systems etc), he lived and worked in the Logan City area. He upgraded(?) to an Eos.
Forgive my naivity also but what does GTG stand for? I only know it as good to go, but a quick google showed that it has some kind of VW significance, but I couldn't find the meaning.

Welcome to OzVolks Trent
Cool R32 nice and clean :D
Thanks everyone.
It's not as clean as it looks in the pics unfortunately. Got a few pin dents and stone chips on it. A few light scratches around the place and the previous owner managed to curb all four wheels. Also a slightly deeper scratch has appeared on the rear bumper (not happy about that). Overall it's pretty clean.
In the end what can you do. If you're gonna drive the car regularly these things are gonna happen.
Thanks for the GTG explanation. So many years on teh interweb and I haven't come across it before. Bit embarrassing really, but I suppose you learn something new everyday.

Phillips BlueVision bulbs have gone in. Can't say there's much of a difference. The light is a little whiter but not a huge difference.

The install of the BlueVision bulbs was a royal pain in the ass. I had to remove the battery of the on the passenger side to be able to move the Xenon ballast enough to allow my fingers/hands space to get the bulb out.
On the drivers side I had to unscrew the reservoir bottle and lift it out to allow me to unscrew the washer bottle and move it back a cm to allow enough room to move the ballast on this side and get my fingers in. Pictures shown below.

Be sure when removing the nut that holds the washer bottle in place that you drop it down into the engine bay so you have to get your needle nose pliers and scrape your hands some more. You can never scrape your hands enough.

Did the kvw100 mod this evening. Nice little unit.
Also got me a little wheel bling. I know they're pretty poxy but I thought why the hell not. Don't worry they don't glow in the dark, light up or anything, they're just metal. I wonder how long they'll last before some little **** steals them?

Dave
The kvw100 mod is a little unit that reprograms your ecu's eprom to give you the window winding functionality that the MkV Golf has. Basically you hold down on the unlock button on your remote and the window winds down until you release it. When you press the lock button on your car it automatically winds up.
You plug it into your odb port for about 40 seconds it beeps, you pull it out and it's done. Unfortunately you only get one reprogram per device though.
It saves you having to wind your windows up when you park. Just hit lock and walk away. A very nice little mod I thought.

According to the site it doesn't look like it.
Try it on your remote as is, coz like I said aside from the auto roll up on lock, you can control your windows via the remote on the MkV Golf (well at least my Dad's GTI anyway).

So holidays up the coast are over. :(
I don't go back to work until next tuesday, which gives me time to play with the car. :)
So I thought I would give the old flapper mod a go. Not just removing the hose but hooking up a switch between the ecu and solenoid as per here (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1446352&page=1). I can' say it went to well. I had all the gear I needed and grabbed a switch, cable and resistors etc and made up the switch.
Then it was time to find the dreaded grey and blue cable. Well buggered if I can find the right one/get to where it should come through. I traced back from the boot well where it runs with a yellow and black cable down the passenger side of the car (I think). It proved too difficult to pull the carpet up/remove the glove box and get to the cables. So I removed all the dash and unscrewed everything in sight on the drivers side. Contorting myself on my back into the foot well, I found lots of cables none of which seem to be the right one. Pinging them out, I can't seem to find the right one. Or get my damn hands into the spots I need. Obviously it would seem that this mod is much easier in the LHD cars.
In the end I gave up and rebuilt my interior and clamped the damn hose.
Lots of fun noise for me but I would like to switch it. Anyone with any ideas/experience? :moon:

Hey Mate,
Welcome to the forums. Thanks for the comments.
I'm only new to the VW world (had the car since September), plus I'm in Brisbane so it definitely wouldn't have been me at the meet.

Well there's plenty of DIYs over on VWVortex that don't make it look too hard. I know the euro bumper is slightly different but comparing the two I don't think it will be an issue.
Plus I have my trusty heat gun. :)

Righto then. A couple of updates. The first one is that I got new tyres on yesterday. A brand new set of shiny Pirelli P-Zero Neros. Oooh... Pictures will be in the next post.
At the same time I got the gutter rash on all four wheels fixed up. What can I say it's good to have wheels that look like new for the first time since I got the car.
Excuse my camera, I think whatever it's got it's terminal.

Installing the Seat Cupra lip.
First step is to remove the one piece plastic undertray which stretches the entire width of the car. This undertray also forms the existing front lip as well. That is it is a molded part tray. Screws run all along the edge of the bumper. Three screws in each wheel arch at the bottom need to be removed. There are also two screws towards the middle of the tray left and right and two screws at the back of the tray left and right.
Note that the euro bumper is different from the US bumper. It has two trays one for each side and nothing in the center. From what I can tell the US bumpers also don't have the euro lip.
Picture of the tray and new lip
http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/6570/1585827ng6.jpg
The lip on the tray. Note the predicament. The Cupra lip is much narrower and bends differently.
http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/3511/1585828eb9.jpg
The next step however is to take a trusty stanley knife and cut off the existing left and right lips. The plastic of the undertray is quite soft and cuts off easily if your knife is sharp if not, a heat gun is your friend. The lip needs to be cut off because the Cupra lips curls around and will not fit over the existing lip.
Next step is to make the grooves on the undertray deeper (see are highlighted below). Once again the stanley knife is your friend. The reason for doing this is that the center bit of the Cupra lip needs to fit on the bottom of the tray as the tray will go above the bumper. The left and right parts of the Cupra lips (from the circled bit) needs to go between the tray and bumper. Where I have circled on the lip has to fit into the groove. Without making the groove deeper the lip will not slide in far enough.
http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/5795/15858271zk8.jpg
The next step is to cut the tops off the posts in the middle of the lip. You can cut them totally off but I decided to leave them quite tall to allow force the center of the lip to go lower.
Now for the fun bit of attaching the lip to the tray. You want to create holes on the lip where the holes are on the tray so you don't have to drill new holes in your bumper. I recommend starting with the holes near where I have highlighted above. Once you have got these aligned properly and drilled put the screws in to hold it in place. You can then work outwards on each side easily drilling and putting in a screw as you go.
When you come to the curve you have too options. You can force the lip out quite easily but you will have to hold it tight while you drill and it will be more difficult when it comes to reattaching to the bumper. The other option is to use a heat gun to bend it out a bit. I chose to do a combination of the two. I didn't bend it out all the way as I didn't want to risk damaging the lip with the heat gun.
http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/7866/1585830yw8.jpg
With the last two holes on each side you will have to really force them in or use a heat gun.
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/1934/1585831qf4.jpg
Then you're done. The lip is ready to be attached to the bumper
http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/1428/1585834bq1.jpg
Finally and probably the hardest bit is attaching the whole lot back to the bumper. If you can lift the front of the car up or remove the bumper i would say that doing this will make the whole experience a lot easier.
I attached the undertray screws at the back and middle first so at least it's sitting there. Don't forget the center of the tray has to go up inside the bumper. Put the 3 center screws in tight then as once the lip goes on you can't get to these again with a normal tx screwdriver.
Then fit the lip and start putting the screws back in in the same order as you did before. If you didn't use a heat gun and forced the size this is where aligning the holes back up will be difficult. If you remove the bumper insets out you can see the holes in the side of the bumper which can help with guiding the screws in. Just remember if you put a torch in there to take it out again.
Once you have the lip attached put the wheel arch screws back in. Finally you will need to trim the ends of the lip off as they protrude into the wheel arch. I used garden shears to do this as someone on Vortex recommended it. They worked like a charm.

So dyno results are in. Can't say I'm overjoyed with them. From a quoted 177kW at the flywheel, I ended up with 122.1kW at all four wheels. So yeah that's a 31% loss through the Haldex system.
http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/8075/20080405dynorunls4.jpg
Some people seemed to be a bit down on what they were expected/ran before while others were very pleasantly surprised. So it's hard to tell exactly what to make of the results.
It will be interesting to see when I make a few mods what the results will be.

Isn't Haldex meant to help you go faster on the corners, or does it just put more power to the back? (Excuse my ignorance, but what's the stock kW at the flywheel?)
Nice rubber btw.. :)

As a general rule for 2WD vehicles on a DD Dyno whatever the car makes in kW at the flywheel as quoted by manufacturer the car will make that in HP at the wheels. ie. 177kW at fly = 177hp at wheels. AWD vehicles will chew another 7-10% of that figure.

It's been a while since I've posted an update so here goes...
Since the dyno day there's been some changes.
The car has had it's first service under my ownership where we discovered that my front brake rotors were below the minimum thickness. I ordered some nice new front rotors from the USA as to get both shipped here was cheaper than what VW Australia wanted for one!
I got the rotors slotted locally once they go here and I got some nice shiny Red Stuff pads all around as well. With the installation I got martini brake fluid and all looks good now.
Other little bits and pieces which I've picked up include BMC CDA, Stubby Antenna, Audi R8 Oil Cap and White parking LEDs.
Also I have some nice H&R springs and Koni Yellow Sports adjustable suspsension sitting in my garage. This will be installed once I've the rest of my suspension/handling setup arrives. I have on order H&R front and rear swaybars as well as a Thomas Tuning Rear Strut Brace.
Also on order are blue tinted asperical side mirror glass and a HPA short shifter.
Once all this is done and I've saved for a bit more that will leave me to do the following:
- Stiffer Engine Mounts
- Haldex
- Chipping/Tuning of Some Kind
- Possibly an front upper strut brace (mainly cosmetic)
- Possibly an Exhaust
- Personalised Euro Style Plates (still trying to come up with a combination)
I am also waiting on pricing for a group buy on the W8 Passat dome light interior modification.
I aim to hopefully to have all this done by the end of the year but as always we'll just have to see how the dollars flow.
I'd also like to offer thanks to the following people/suppliers who have helped me out so far.
A big thanks to all the people and companies who have helped me out so far.
