G'day everyone,

Hope this is the right place for a intro, my name is John i live in Melbourne and work in the automotive industry. I have been lurking around this great forum and was hoping to get some advice from you guys here.

I am looking at buying a 03/04 Golf. Going from a SS Ute into a Golf may be a bit of a transition i realise, but i am looking forward to it. The question i have is on the fuel economy side of things. Can someone tell me what kind of fuel economy i will get from the 2lt Golf and what i would get from the GTi? I would be looking at a manual.

Is there any links i could have a look at the specs on the 2 models? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Welcome,

Probably the best historical guide is www.redbook.com.au (http://www.redbook.com.au)

It shows fuel consumption for the 2.0 manual to be:

urban 8.5 l / 100
extra urban 5.4l l / 100

and the GTI to be :

8.5l / 100 &
5.6 l / 100

http://www.redbookasiapacific.com/au/vehicle/comparespecs.php?id2=107188&id=107186

good thing is with the GTI is its 2.5 seconds quicker 0-100!

Good luck with the shopping!

Hi there,
I changed from a SS fifty ute to a MkV gti. I have an APR tune and must say I get about 650-700km on a tank, great considering the performance. I miss the V8 sound but thats all, the turbo surge is great and it's so much fun to drive. Good luck looking for yours, you'll kick yourself if you don't get the GTi.

Bye for now.

Thanks for the replies guys. Interesting to see the Gti is pretty comparable in the fuel consumption department.

Is there any other major differences between the Gti and the 2lt? Are there any issues with reliability on the Gti? Also what performance mods would you suggest i start with? If i do the usual intake and exhaust mods do i need to reflash the ECU? What size exhaust do you generally run? Are heavy duty sway bars and strut braces popular? Lastly who and where do you suggest i turn to for mods and tuning?

Thanks again in advance for the advice.

Cheers

Hi John,

Most importantly, find the best car for the best $$$.

An ECU tune is generally 1st on the list, then exhaust - we normally use 2.5" for the best balance of flow / power / torque gains!

Good luck in the hunt :)
