Phaeton has asked me to post these pics on here. They have been on a lot of other forums and I apollogise to those that would have seen them before.
The Mk1 is "Gunter", a 76 LS converted to GTI specs, brake wise and swaybar wise. I ran a standard 1.8 Twin cam and a Quaife dif. Bilstein revalved shocks and far too soft springs!!
I competed for 6 years in it and over 22,000 kms. I drove it to and from events. Twice towed home over all that time. Once after a T bone prang at Symmons Plains, the other after a front hub snapped at Baskerville.
I got some great results in it and always surprised other competitors.
It is now sitting in my shed covered in bird poo and is missing the motor and gearbox.
Had lots of fun in it until I took on circuit racing where there were too many mind games and backstabbing going on.
I did hillclimbs, motorkhana championships, circuit sprints, one gravel event and tarmac rally events, (which were my forte) and racing.
It was built on a small budget and was very cheap to maintain, though the results way outclassed a lot of expensive cars out there, especially in road rallies. Best result was 8th outright in Rally Tasmania, ven after knocking out 3 guideposts!!
Cheers, Andrew
